WHY TELL STORIES WITH TINY TOYS?

Narrative events are a lot of fun.

We get to play together with a bunch of our friends, in a space which is collective and alive.

That life continues beyond the story itself - those models have been somewhere, and done something.

Each narrative adds to a model's storied and sometimes contradictory history, scuffs on an old floor, or the graffitied palimpsest of a bathroom stall.

The lack of an explicit competitive drive in narrative wargaming events encourages jank and playful expression which wargaming as pure gaming can sometimes force us to eschew.

Doing things with cool people is fun. Worrying about the meta is not. It is a replacement for fun which you do on your lonesome. It signifies nothing, and enhances nobodies experience but your own.

If you like playing in narrative events, you should also try hosting them. It sometimes feels thankless, but your own experience as a player will tell you that is far from the case.

I have never played in a narrative event that I was not thankful to have been a part of. I remember every one of them, even if the stories are not so clear anymore.

If you’re reading this, there's a good chance you’re thinking about hosting a narrative wargaming event, and I think you should. I wouldn’t hold it against you if you didn’t, I'd be proud of you if you did, and I'm impressed if you already have.

If there are no such events in your area, maybe it will happen someday? Maybe somebody else will do it?

Why not you? Why not now?

Narrative wargaming events will not happen unless we make them happen.

You can do it - of that Im certain - but it will take some doing.

Sit somewhere comfortable. Get a drink. Consider some tunes. Are you ready?

Now we can begin.
